There are a lot of weight loss supplements out there, and the best way to lose weight is to combine them with diet and exercise. But how do you know which ones to take?
That, of course, depends on what you want from your supplement. Do you want to reduce body fat or prevent your body from putting more on? How quickly do you want it to work? How many supplements do you want to take?
We look at two of the best weight loss supplements and their pros and cons to help you decide.
What Are Raspberry Ketones and Forskolin Supplements?
Raspberry Ketones are one small part of the raspberry fruit that has been used to create the smell of berries in various products. It wasn’t until more recently that clinical trials showed they could reduce fat levels and even help prevent weight gain.
Forskolin is from a plant in the mint family – the Coleus Forskolin. It’s been used for hundreds of years as traditional medicine, most notable as a remedy for asthma and glaucoma. Again, more recently, it’s seen to reduce weight gain and aid weight loss.
So which should you choose? Let’s look at the pros and cons of each.
- Increases metabolism
- Fat binding
- Fat burner
- Prevents weight gain
In clinical trials on both rodents and humans, raspberry ketones show some promise, but more studies need to be done. The studies on rodents were more successful than those on humans, so they’re not the miracle some sites would have you believe, but they have had some success. They’re definitely more effective at preventing further weight gain in humans. Hopefully, more studies will be done. Users report that they aid weight loss too, but anecdotal evidence isn’t always the most reliable.
- Needs more studies.
- Need large amounts to be effective, making it expensive.
- Slow to work.
- Side effects include increased blood pressure.
There have only been a couple of human trials on Raspberry Ketone so you should be wary of anyone telling you it’s a miracle supplement. It has its benefits certainly, but those are only from a couple of trials of small sample groups.
Due to the large dosage of Raspberry Ketones needed for it to be effective, this can start to add up in terms of cost. Also, while it’s origins are natural, berries produce too few of the ketones so anything mass produced is created artificially. It’s also slower to work than other diet supplements. This can be frustrating when you’re already putting in a lot of money and effort into it.
The side effects can be dangerous too. Many overweight people already have higher blood pressure, and these could raise that further leading to heart disease among other problems. You should always check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking Raspberry Ketones if you’re already taking prescription medication.
- Reduces body fat
- Prevent weight gain
- Lowers blood sugar levels
Forskolin has been shown to reduce body fat when taken twice daily and also breaks fat down in the body. It also prevents weight gain again, helping keep the weight off even if you’re not actively dieting.
While not everybody who is overweight or wanting to try supplements like this have diabetes, many do. One of its many benefits is that it lowers blood sugar levels. This is an excellent addition and something to consider even if you don’t want to lose weight but just want to be healthy.
It’s a natural substance too, a plant extract, so the side effects are minimal, and interaction with other medications are lowered too. If you’re on a natural or organic diet, this is something that can aid it without you having to compromise on the nature of your diet and without putting extra artificial chemicals into your body.
- Better results in men.
- Side effects include lowered blood pressure.
- Increased stomach acid.
- More study needed.
Clinical studies in men and women showed that Forskolin was much more effective in men than in women so this might have a bearing on whether you want to try it. Raspberry Ketones haven’t shown to be effective in either sex. Much like Ketones, there have only been a couple of studies on humans and in small samples.
While the side effects are minimal, especially when compared to other supplements. There are a couple that you need to be aware of. Lowered blood pressure is a good thing of course, but if your blood pressure is normal, or you are already on medication to lower blood pressure, then you need to be careful taking Forskolin. Low blood pressure can cause you to feel dizzy. Too low and it’s dangerous. But if you have high blood pressure and want to try something natural instead of prescription medication then this is an option.
As well as affecting blood pressure it also increases stomach acid. So, if you take any medication for that, you may want to consider something else. Of course, you should always consult your pharmacist or doctor if you’re unsure about taking a supplement.
Which is Best?
So, which should you choose? The honest answer is that it all depends on you. Raspberry Ketones are slower to work but can be effective in both men and women. They have more effects on the actual existing fat in your body than the Forskolin does, but both prevent further weight gain.
Forskolin has more health benefits than which you might make them worth taking regardless of your weight loss goals. You can’t deny that lower blood sugar levels and lower blood pressure are of a great benefit to many people and most people are on medication for one or the other. These are proven in studies as well, though the samples were small.
It’s natural too, but that doesn’t mean you should dismiss Raspberry Ketones out of hand – they are derived from nature – and most medication started out as plants taken as traditional medicine.
We certainly prefer the overall health benefits of the Forskolin, over the Ketone and are keen to see further studies done on both these supplements.
