Maca is a vegetable native to Peru with a long history as more than just a food source. It’s related to the cabbage, and part of the Mustard family. It’s a rich source of nutrients, and you can see why for it’s been cultivated for thousands of years. Its root has been used to make medicine for just as long. Originally it was an aphrodisiac and an energy booster; claims that are still made today.
However, we’re more interested in whether it can be used for weight loss and if it’s any good. Any other benefits are an added bonus.
Maca Powder for Weight Loss
Maca Root is more commonly found in powder or capsule form. Less common harder to find forms are the vegetable itself and a liquid form. The powder or capsule supplements will be easier to find in your local stores. The capsule is easy enough, taken once or twice a day. If you’re already taking regular supplements or medication, this will be easy to add to your daily regimen.
Maca powder offers some versatility in taking your supplement. With the powder, you can add it to smoothies, hot drinks, oatmeal or put it in baking, and add lots of nutrition to your regular meals as well as other health benefits. Not everyone likes the taste of the powder of course, and it may take a little experimentation to find something you enjoy mixing it with. Many people describe the powders taste as nutty and earthy.
Health Benefits and Weight Loss
Maca Root has plenty of health benefits, but weight loss is not directly connected to the root. There have been no studies on maca root and weight loss. What is does do certainly aids in weight loss however through its other effects on the human body?
One of its original uses thousands of years ago was for extra energy. It’s nutritional values certainly would aid in this as it contains, fiber, iron, minerals and B Vitamins. If you’re low in these nutrients, especially iron or B vitamins, then this will make you feel more energized. A clinical study was performed on cyclists also showed to improve energy and performance, and studies on animals showed similar results and an improvement in endurance too.
Of course more studies need to be done on Maca Root and the effects it has on the human body, especially when it comes to improving energy; however, more energy will mean you will be able to exercise more and metabolize food quicker. It’s not a straight route to weight loss, but it is a way towards it.
Further health benefits that would aid in weight loss include improving mood, which of course if you feel better you’ll find it easier to put effort into the diet and exercise needed to lose weight. It’s also shown to improve fertility in men, improve sexual libido and even improve memory though again studies into memory have only been done on animals so far. Some of these benefits will aid in weight loss in a roundabout way. It all depends on how you look at it of course but Maca Root is definitely a great supplement to add your regimen if you’re looking to improve your health overall.
The good news is that Maca Root has very few side effects reported, though it must be noted that there have been few scientific studies into the effects of the root as a while and the FDA has yet to approve the effects of Maca Root (positive or negative). As it’s a food source that has been used for a long time, the effects are minimal, but there are a couple of things you need to be careful of.
Maca contains Goitrogens, which are a substance that affects the production of thyroid hormones. So anyone with thyroid conditions should avoid this supplement. It also acts like estrogen in the body, so people who have hormone imbalances or are on prescription hormones also need to be careful with this product.
Some websites have also claimed that higher doses of Maca Root may increase blood pressure but there is no evidence to support this and no medical websites state that as a side effect and there no clinical studies that state this either.
Of course, you can always check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new supplement. Even if you’re not, you can be sure you’re still getting everything you need and maybe a little more.

There is rarely a straight route to weight loss, or an easy one and Maca Root isn’t going to change that. What it is going to do is help with your weight loss journey in that roundabout way we love so much; by improving other aspects of your mind and body that will make losing weight easier.
By improving your overall mood, and improving your energy and stamina levels are certainly going to make your weight loss journey a little easier. Maca Root is highly nutritious too, so while you are dieting (and even if you’re not), you can still be sure you’re getting everything your body needs to function and be healthy.
